The
Importance of Spiritual Care
Ganga Prem Hospice is a spiritually orientated, non-profit hospice for terminally ill cancer patients. The hospice care programme will also include spiritual care for patients and their families. Spiritual care means providing a loving and supportive atmosphere in which patients and their carers can feel free to explore their deepest feelings about their own being and their connection with a Higher Power. As the physical body deteriorates and death draws nearer an inevitable question arises in the mind of the patient. Where will I go now? What will happen to me now? As death approaches, the mind of the dying person reaches forward trying to see beyond the veil of death. The fact that the body is dying forces the mind to seek some other sanctuary. Some will take refuge in a Higher Power. Some will search for answers concerning the ancient questions as to whether or not there is life after death, whether or not the soul is eternal, whether or not there is a state of being beyond this body.
The Location of Ganga
Prem Hospice
In order that we can provide a spiritual atmosphere
as well as medical care we have chosen a setting
for our hospice which is both beautiful and serene.
The State of Uttarakhanda, which is famous for
its charming scenery, its peaceful, healthy atmosphere
and its sacred traditions, is particularly suited
to the provision of palliative care for the terminally
ill.
The Haridwar and Rishikesh area, nestled at the
foot of the Himalayan mountains and adorned by
the holy Ganga river is one of the Mukti Kshetras
of India (places which bestow liberation). As
such it is the ideal location for a hospice.
The spiritual ambience of the area will help the
patients and their families to accept the coming
inevitability and to remain emotionally calm.
Lead us from unreality to Reality. Lead us from darkness to Light. Lead us from death to Immortality. (Upanishad)
