THE SUPPORT A CANCER PATIENT SCHEME

This scheme will give donors an opportunity to pay for cancer treatment for a financially underprivileged cancer patient. Ganga Prem Hospice volunteers will assess applicants for benefit from this scheme and patients who are chosen will be taken by volunteers to have their treatment and will be cared for during the treatment by the volunteers. Any one who wishes to donate to this scheme and support a cancer patient should contact Sarojini Murthy at sarojiniji@hotmail.com Supporters will be able to receive regular reports on their patients progress. The first person to benefit from this scheme is Madhu Rana ( age 45) of Ganganagar, Rishikesh, who  is in need of Chemo Therapy for a recurrent cancer of the cervix. She will be supported by Sylvia Dora Puschel of Zofingen, Switzerland. Madhu is a single mother, whose only son, Anil (age 23), has already fallen deeply in debt trying to provide for his mother’s treatment. Madhu started chemo therapy on 11th February at the Himalayan Institute, Dehradun. She was accompanied by Sarojini Murthy who made all the arrangements for her treatment,

THE HOME CARE PROGRAMME

This scheme gives donors and volunteers an opportunity to provide comfort and solace to terminally ill cancer patients in their own homes. Ganga Prem Hospice volunteers will visit terminally ill cancer patients in their own homes and as far as possible provide medical, social, emotional and spiritual support to the patient and their families. The first person to benefit from this scheme is Pushpa Devi (aged 55) of Ganganagar, Rishikesh, who is terminally ill with liver/gall bladder cancer. At present she is being visited by Ganga Prem Hospice volunteer, Eliza Renwick, who is a fully trained hospice nurse.

Pushpa Devi left her body peacefully on 1st of March, surrounded by her family.

From the 1st of March two new cancer patients are being visited by the GPH volunteers.

January  Clinic 2008

Our monthly cancer clinic was held on the 27 th January and Dr Dewan saw 33 patients. A new volunteer, Eliza, who is a registered nurse with hospice experience, was welcomed on to the team. She sat with Sarojini at reception helping with the registration of patients and getting to know to know them.

Some patients came with general ailments, for which Dr. Dewan dispensed medicines. Some patients were asked to take scans or ultra sound etc and return next month. Unfortunately one lady who was diagnosed with 3rd stage cancer could not afford the treatments. Sarojini spoke to her and tears dropped from the lady's eyes. Dr Dewan has again appealed for help for those patients that cannot afford treatment.*

Another lady was identified as TICP (terminally ill cancer patient) and to be in need of home visits. It was decided that Ganga Prem Hospice will now expand its help to include home visits. Eliza will be doing the home visits with Sarojiniji.. Dr. Dewan gave Eliza some Fentanyl patches to put on the patient. The patches will have to be changed every 3 days so the home visits will start with visits every 3 days. Eliza will submit home visit reports to Dr Dewan after each visit for comments and further instructions.

After the clinic Dr. Dewan ran through the rudimentaries of home visits. He emphasised the importance of communicating with the patient. He said that volunteers should not to raise the patients’ hopes with false promises nor should they promise any funds for any treatment. He stressed the importance of praising the family and relatives in the good work they are doing by caring for the sick family member. He said that the patient should not be frightened by telling them that they have x number of months to live etc. but that the volunteers should let them know in some indirect way that he/she may not have long to live so that he/she can put their affairs in order.  Dr. Dewan said volunteers mostly need to listen to the patients and their families and to help make their life as comfortable as is possible through the home visits.

Mr Ghai has offered the clinic venue for training volunteers. GPH appeals for volunteers both male and female, with or without training in nursing or palliative care. However Hindi speakers and trained volunteers will be especialy welcome for this work. Any one who would like to offer their services for home visits should contact Bibi Hamel at   bibi.hamel@gmail.com

February Clinic 2008

At the February clinic Dr. Dewan saw a total of 25 patients.  It was decided that  Rajrani Sharma, F 69, Ca Breast should receive Home visiting once in every 10 days to assess her pain and give pain relief.  Dr. Dewan also requested the volunteers to do a follow-up on one of the patients, Kumesh Singhal, who had hoarseness of voice and had been asked to carry out some investigations.  The volunteers are in touch with him. A male hospice nurse, Stan Giles from the USA also attended the clinic and offered his services as a volunteer. He was welcomed by the other members of the team. There were also some new people who were interested to join the 'Friends of GPH Society' and help with volunteer work. Dr Dewan had brought some surgical dressings for Ma Chetan Jyoti and Sarojini delivered them to her ashram.

.

March Clinic 2008

At the cancer clinic on 30th March 30 patients were seen. As usual it was a slow start but by 10am the patients started walking in. Some were regular patients returning for follow up checks. Dr. Dewan had reassuring words for each patient. Every patient left there somewhat reassured. This is what constitutes palliative care... the most important component of hospice care-giving. One of our home visit patients Madhu Rana also came. To sustain her health Dr. Dewan gave her some Protein Powder and some vitamin drink sachets.
A gynaecologist from Nirmal Hospital Dr. Geetika Dwivedil arrived later in the morning. She met Dr. Dewan and sat with him and observed the patients. She also examined two female patients.
Daniel, our visiting professional photographer, took few photos and was thoroughly impressed with the work we were doing.

On the evening before the clinic Dr Dewan and Bibi Hamel visited the 2 patients who are benefiting from our Home Care Programme. After reassessing their pain he gave appropriaten advice on how to proceed. After the home visits Dr Dewan and the Rishikesh volunteers had a meeting to discuss further developments in GPH's services and volunteer training programmes.

CHARITY CONCERT
At Rishikesh

The Ganga Prem Hospice Charity Concert held at Rishikesh on the afternoon of 2nd Jan was an outstanding success. Guru Jyoti Rout and Krishna Das thrilled the audience with their talented and uplifting performances. Between 400-500 people attended the concert at Parmarth Niketan yoga hall, which had been generously donated and decorated for the occasion.

Sarojini Murthy welcomed everyone and the performers and special guests were garlanded. Her opening speech was followed by a short talk on the spiritual significance of classical dance by Swami Premananda of Ganeshpur Uttarkashi. Jyoti then performed four beautiful Oddisi dances, accompanied by her musicians and singer who had especially travelled from Orrisa for the concert. She had created a new dance for the occasion which was dedicated to Ganga ji and followed the Ganga Stotram of Adi Shankaracharya. Her dancing held the audience spellbound and elevated them into the different spiritual realms portrayed by her movements and mudras. Sarojini thanked Jyoti for the performance and the audience went out onto the beautiful lawns for light refreshments of tea and pakoras. Inside the hall, volunteers quickly rearranged the seating in order that the unexpectedly large crowd could sit more comfortably.

The break was followed by a short talk about the Hospice project by Nanima, one of the trustees. Ma Chetan Jyoti of Rishikesh also made a brief speech about the Hospice project during which she announced her intention to bequeath her Ashram, Krishna Kripa Ashram to Ganga Prem Hospice.

Excitement in the hall mounted as Krishna Das asked everyone at the back if they could hear properly and then he began his performance with the chanting of Om and a few slokas in praise of Hanuman ji. Krishna Das punctuated his kirtans with humorous but deeply meaningful stories about his Guruji Neem Karoli Babaji Maharaj. The audience responded enthusiastically to Krishna Das's charismatic kirtan, with loud changing and 'Jay Ho'. During the performance, Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji Maharaj, the President of Parmarth Niketan along with Pujya Swami Asanganand Saraswatiji Maharaj, the Chairman of Shukevanand Trust blessed the gathering with their presence. They were both welcomed and honoured with flower garlands. Krishna Das delighted the audience with his 'Jesus on the hotline' as well as many traditional Hindu kirtans. He brought his mastery performance to an end with Om shanti shanti shanti and a few minutes silence.

Nanima ji thanked Krishna Das and Guru Jyoti Rout ji for their performances. She thanked Pujya Swamiji for the generosity shown in sponsoring the concert. She also thanked Renu Gulati and her husband Prem Narayana for their tireless work in organising the concert. Sarojini Murthy received special thanks for all the invaluable assistance she gave to Renu. Bibi Hamel and the other volunteers who manned the ticket sales, entrances and fund raising stalls were all thanked for their help.

After the concert all the participants were invited by Parmarth Niketan to attend the Ganga arati and partake of prasad at the Ashram. Pujya Swamiji honoured Krishna Das, Jyoti Rout, Nanima and visiting Swamis at the evening arati with shawls and garlands. A DVD of the occasion was made and will be on sale shortly. The concert was a wonderful way to start of the New Year and raised Rs 88,664 for Ganga Prem Hospice
